In 1988 a steering committee of eight Saint Cloud citizens
applied for Affiliate status with Habitat for Humanity International in
Americus, Georgia. In 1989 the Affiliate status was granted and the
first house was begun. A partner family purchased the house in
1990. In 2006 Central Minnesota Habitat for
Humanity will complete its 40th home.

Habitat for Humanity has been accurately described
as "a hand-up, not a hand-out." That phrase tells the story of how
Habitat purposefully works in partnership WITH deserving families. It
is not a governmental program or an entitlement program. Selected
Habitat families must not only be willing and able to pay back their
no-interest loan, but the applicant adults must work hundreds of hours
each, in order to qualify to purchase a Habitat home. |
| Central Minnesota Habitat for Humanity serves
Stearns, Benton, Sherburne, and Wright counties. Each chapter is
operated by local volunteers. In addition, students from St. Cloud Technical College, St. Cloud State University, The College of St. Benedict, and St. John's University all volunteer actively with Central Minnesota Habitat for Humanity. |
