Once the construction/renovation is complete and when the Partner Family has completed all sweat equity and homeownership classes, the family will sign a mortgage. A mortgage with Habitat for Humanity lasts from 20 to 30 years. Although a family does not have to pay interest on their mortgage, they are required to pay the monthly mortgage payment, insurance, taxes, and utilities. When the amount of the mortgage payment is determined by Habitat for Humanity, the income of the family as well as the other house payments (taxes, utilities, insurance) will be taken into account to make sure that the mortgage payment is affordable.
