Central Minnesota Habitat for Humanity is seeking community members to be on the Family Selection Committee. Family Selection Committee Members are responsible for reviewing applications using the three objective selection criteria. As part of the application review, members will conduct a home visit to an applicant to obtain further information regarding the family's level of need.
Training
-Each selection member will attend two trainings. One is to learn about the application form and how to coach applicants in filling out the application. The second is to learn how to screen applicants and conduct home visits.
-Ongoing training sessions will be provided as needed.
Time Commitment
-Remain active a minimum of two years. This will consist of a total of 2-4 selection cycles.
-Attend all trainings
-Attend at least one public information meeting per selection cycle
-Attend all committee meetings to review applications. For each selection cycle, the committee meets once before and once after the home visits to review applicants.
-Conduct home visits as assigned.
Responsibilities
-Helping coach applicants in filling out an application at a minimum of one public information meeting per selection cycle.
-Timely review of applications, meeting once before and once after the home visits.
-Maintaining the confidentiality of applicant information and files.
-Conduct home visits appropriately.
Qualifications
Note: These are all items that volunteers will be trained in:
-Understanding of the Habitat for Humanity mission.
-Knowledge of the board-approved selection process, its criteria and other selection requirements.
-Understanding of the challenges low-income families face.
-Ability to objectively participate in the decision-making process.
-Ability to read tax transcripts and credit reports.
-Acting in a non-discriminatory manner as specified by the Fair Housing/Fair Credit laws.
